Josei

女性josei
Quick definition:Josei is manga and anime aimed mainly at adult women, with realistic stories about work, relationships, family and everyday life, told with more mature emotional depth than shojo.

Meaning

Josei is a demographic category for women in their late teens and older. It follows on naturally from shojo, which is aimed at girls, but the stories deal with adult concerns such as careers, marriage, friendship, money and growing older.

Many josei works are grounded and realistic, with ordinary settings such as offices, apartments and cafes. Others add fantasy, historical settings or comedy. The pace is often slower and more personal than in action series, and the artwork may be simpler and more naturalistic, though styles vary widely. Romance is common, but it is usually treated as one part of a character's life alongside ambition, friendship and family pressures.

In Japan, many of these works appear in magazines sometimes described as ladies' comics. Josei is less visible overseas than shonen or shojo, which makes it something of an insider recommendation among fans.

Origin:Josei is a Japanese word written with characters meaning woman and sex or gender, and it simply means a woman. The word is used in publishing to describe magazines and manga for adult female readers, and English-language fans adopted it as a category label alongside shonen, shojo and seinen.
Example:Nodame Cantabile follows a talented but messy pianist and a serious student conductor at a music school. It blends comedy, romance and ambition, tracks musical dreams and the pressures of a creative career, and shows how the category treats young adults finding their place in the world.
Did you know? The labels shojo and josei sometimes overlap. A series published in a magazine for girls can be enjoyed by adult women, and a series in an adult women's magazine can feature teenage characters, which is why fans sometimes disagree about how to categorise a title.
